Fourth of July, The Trucker Way
In Chicago, the Fourth of July is more than just fireworks over the lake. It's neighborhoods packed with cookouts, flags hanging off balconies, and folks crowding the lakefront early to claim a spot. But while most people are off the clock, truckers are still rolling.
Plenty of drivers spend Independence Day behind the wheel or parked at a dock. Not because they want to miss out, but because the freight still moves. The grills, the coolers, the hot dog buns and soda displays at the corner store, none of it gets there by itself.
Being on the road during a holiday isn’t glamorous. You might grab a sandwich at a roadside stop while hearing fireworks pop in the distance. You might catch a quick call home between loads. It’s quiet, but it’s part of the job.
Stay Sharp This Weekend
Holiday weekends bring more than traffic. There’s usually a spike in DUI drivers, especially after 3 or 4 PM. People are towing boats, campers, and trailers they barely know how to handle. Lane discipline goes out the window. Add in tourists cutting across lanes trying to make exits they missed, and it can get chaotic fast.
This isn’t the weekend to rush. Give yourself extra space, especially in construction zones and around exits near big fireworks shows or parks. Keep a lookout for temporary road closures or event traffic, especially in places like Joliet, Aurora, or along I-94 heading north.
A few reminders to run clean:
-
Do your full pre-trip, tires, lights, brakes, securement, everything.
-
Watch your hours. Enforcement tends to be stricter around holidays.
-
Check your mirrors often. Smaller cars tend to sneak up fast when traffic is stop-and-go.
-
If your route runs near lakes, rivers, or state parks, expect heavy backups around midday and evening.
If you’re stopped somewhere overnight, park smart. Some places get rowdy with fireworks and parties nearby. Choose well-lit truck stops over random lots or back roads. If you’re driving overnight, keep snacks and water ready, many stores close early.
The Fourth might look different from the cab, but you’re still playing a big part in making it all happen. You’re keeping things moving when most people are taking it easy. That deserves respect.
