Edge Protectors have many different purposes from protecting your straps and tarps from sharp corners. Seasoned truck drivers know that there are many different styles of edge protectors out there to choose from, which can range from 4” plastic to 48” Poly plastic and steel corner protectors. The most simplistic edge protectors are the plastic corner protectors. Edge Protectors are a very key piece of equipment to have in your toolbox, in many areas and states they are becoming DOT mandatory, make sure to check your laws and regulations. The plastic corner protectors are a great tool because they are used to protect your strap webbing from any type of sharp edges on your cargo. Edge Protectors help to even out the tension in your straps webbing, if your load is uneven, it can cause your straps webbing to fray or have abrasion cuts in it very easily. When you use an edge protector underneath your webbing on the corners or edges of your cargo this helps distribute the tension while you are ratcheting down your straps. This will make your straps more secure and give them more longevity as well.
Beyond that these Edge Protectors placed on top of your cargo can protect your tarps from any corners and/or edges and keep them from slicing or getting cuts in them. We all know tarps are the most expensive product to purchase, so why not protect it with the least expensive product? The plastic corner protectors come in many different sizes and shapes depending on the type of cargo you are transporting.
Steel Corner Protectors have a few different styles and all for different reasons. Steel Corner Protectors are used for a few different reasons, such as hauling coils, other metals, machinery or anything that may need something more durable and tougher than the typical Plastic Corner Protector can handle. The rule of thumb is, if you are using chains and binders, you should protect your cargo with Steel Corner Protectors. If all you have is Plastic Corner Protectors, these are better than nothing, but this is why a seasoned truck driver usually will carry a few different types of Edge Protectors with him in his toolbox.
The standard Steel Corner Protector is just plain steel with two small lips on the top of it to help with the chains to stay put when they are placed on top. These are good for most tie-down jobs involving smaller machinery or coils.
If you want something a little better, you can get the Steel Corner Protectors that have a rubber backing. This rubber backing helps with the edge protector not slipping or sliding during the tie-down process and during transporting you know this will not slip or move anywhere if everything is secure.
There is also a Steel Corner Protector that has a chain slot in it. This small slot is designed so when you put the corner protector on top of your cargo you can run your chain through this slot, and it does not have to run on top of it. This is a nice option if you also must tarp, and the chain will not have to touch or rub on your tarp (you may still have to protect your tarp in other areas).
Coil Cuffs are a great tool if you are hauling coils. These work by hugging the bottom inside of your coil, therefore protecting your cargo from your chain when you run your chain from one side of your trailer to the other to secure your load.
